🚧 1. Cross Prairie Parkway Connector officially broke ground
This is one of the most important current infrastructure stories affecting the St. Cloud/Kissimmee area.
Osceola County held the groundbreaking on October 6, 2026 for the approximately $36 million Cross Prairie Parkway Connector project. The project will connect the currently disconnected portions of Cross Prairie Parkway.
The planned extension is approximately 1.6 miles and includes:
- Four-lane divided roadway
- Bike lanes
- Sidewalk
- Multi-use recreational path
- Drainage improvements
- Stormwater ponds
- Signalization at Nolte Road
- Street lighting and landscaping
The county currently anticipates completion around Summer 2028.
🚒 2. St. Cloud’s growth is putting pressure on roads and emergency services
A major recent local story focuses on the city’s rapid growth.
Fire Station 32 on Old Canoe Creek Road is under construction with approximately $5.3 million invested by the city. It is expected to be completed this fall.
At the same time, officials are addressing congestion on Canoe Creek Road. Current traffic is approximately 14,000 vehicles per day, with projections reaching about 39,000 by 2045.
A proposed project would widen approximately four miles of Canoe Creek Road from two lanes to four.

🚧 3. Cypress Tree Trail repairs have begun
The road failure at Cypress Tree Trail is now moving into permanent repair.
Beginning October 5, crews started work to replace three 84-inch stormwater pipes and repair sidewalks.
The city approved a $1.2 million contract for the work.
The road is closed during construction, and residents beyond the damaged section are using a detour. The city expects the project to be completed by late November 2026.
🏗️ 4. St. Cloud Commons remains a major downtown development story
One of the biggest development discussions in St. Cloud this year is the proposed $60 million St. Cloud Commons project.
Plans reported earlier this year include:
- Approximately 150 apartments
- More than 17,000 square feet of commercial space
- A 542-space parking garage
- Retail at street level
- Apartments above
- Location next to City Hall
The project has generated an interesting debate: How much development can downtown St. Cloud absorb without losing its small-town character?
City leadership has argued that additional commercial development is necessary to expand the tax base and support downtown businesses. Some residents and downtown business owners have expressed concerns about density and the changing character of downtown.
